René Clement - Maadi Nights, 2020
In Maadi Nights, the leafy, affluent neighbourhood of Maadi, a suburb of Cairo, is transformed into a series of fantastic, Gotham city-like nightscapes occupied by seemingly familiar, yet unrecognisable ‘visitors’. Manipulating his images to create perfectly symmetrical compositions, Clement morphs trees and buildings into Rorschach like ink blots, a psychological projective test from the 1920s that was used to determine an individual’s hidden emotions. Seen from far ‘faces’ and patterns become apparent making the images ambivalent, open to personal interpretation based on one’s unconscious thoughts, motives, or desires.
