Born in Cairo, Nabil Boutros lives and works between Cairo and Paris. He began his practice with painting, scenography, and installation work but since the late 1980s, photography has been his favoured medium of expression. Today, Boutros is at the forefront of documentary photography, exploring daily rituals, religious rites of Muslims and Christians and expressions of culture, identity and modernity. Egypt lies at the crux of his work: beginning with questions about his own identity and his relationship to his homeland, the series of photographs, conducted over extended periods of time, develop into a meditation of what it means to be Egyptian and a simultaneous challenge to the viewers’ perceptions of Egypt.

Boutros’ work has been shown in major cultural institutions, including the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Institut du monde arabe, Paris; the Natural History Museum,Luanda; and the Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt. He has participated in numerous festivals, dedicated to photography and other events including the Rencontres de la Photographie in Bamako, the Lyon Biennial and the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art. His works are represented in private and public collections such as the Institut du monde arabe and the British Museum, London.
