Heba Khalifa - Homemade, 2016

Homemade is a series of photographs telling the personal stories of women in Egypt. Collaborating with anonymous individuals she met on a closed Facebook group, Khalifa uses her photographic practice to give voice to their struggles, fears and dreams, often using props, collage and paint to create poignant visual narratives that address issues surrounding body image, gender inequality, domestic abuse, childrearing and abortion. The pictured subjects are all dressed in Carina full bodysuits, a type of synthetic and clinging clothing often worn by women in Egypt and elsewhere, which the artist has used symbolically to conceptualise the idea of feeling imprisoned or trapped as she explores the truths and tribulations of womanhood.
