Barry Iverson - Cairo, 1980

“Cairo 1980 is a portrait of a city very much in transition. Sadat’s ‘open door’ policy reversed decades of Soviet leanings and turned to the west to modernize Egyptian society following the Camp David peace accords. A look at the sleepy Cairo Stock Exchange image reveals a nation that has not yet bought into globalization - but is about to. Half of Sinai was still under Israeli occupation. Sadat’s assassination in October 1981 further disoriented an already pensive nation, yet there was no turning back.” Barry Iverson
